28 x 36", 71 x 92cm

Oil on canvas

Notes: The first state of this painting was dated 1964-66, the final state was completed the following year. It is a portrait of Dr and Mrs Errol Wall. According to a letter from Hodgkin to the Thamesdown Museum Service dated 20 June 1989, this painting “is a picture of two friends listening to the gramophone, and it did begin (far more than picture of mine now) as a reasonably straightforward depiction of the two of them listening to music in their living room”. There is another painting with the same title, see PA2b.
